Velázquez on Today's Attacks of Domestic Terror at U.S. Capitol

Statement

Date: Jan. 6, 2021
Location: Washington, DC

Nydia M. Velázquez (D-NY) issued the following statement following the attacks and riots at the U.S. Capitol today:

"Today, America's highest ideals were shattered by a President who incited an act of domestic terrorism. This was an insurrection and direct attack on our Democracy, and tragically resulted in the loss of a life. All involved in today's attacks must be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.

"Tonight, Congress will certify the results of the election cementing Biden as the democratically elected next President. Then, I believe it is long overdue to invoke the 25th Amendment to remove Trump from office. He is dangerously unhinged and unfit. Enough is enough.

To the Republicans who will tonight condemn this attack of domestic terror without recognizing their role and complicity in fueling the flames of this President--save it. The American people deserve so much better than the gaslighting that has been propagated by President Trump and every Congressional Republican who stands by his coup to undermine a free and fair election."
